I graduated university just in time for my hometown, USA to come in second place behind Detroit in unemployment. Not to worry, if college taught me anything it’s that a little critical thinking and perseverance can go a long way. Well, I have an English BA, want to travel, and love a challenge. Fast forward a couple months: I’m living on a rural Island in South Korea and teaching English in a school that’s never hosted a foreigner. The result is a fine opportunity for cultural immersion and personal growth while living/working abroad for one year. The purpose of this blog is to document my adventure and hopefully spark conversation around the lessons learned and observations made. As a bonus I’m hoping that my family/friends can use this as a resource for staying in touch when I lapse in my correspondence.

Finally got off my lazy ass to read your blog. So sorry I waited. You are the best descriptive writer I have ever read. Combined wth your humour and observations makes for a captivating, entertaining and informative read. Your description of the ferry ride to work paints a clear picture in my mind. I can feel your frustration, admiration, awe, loneliness and sense of routine really well. Of course being a Koch your description of the Glue shits put me in hysterics. I think your writing has gotten better the more your blog. I evnision your pear shaped ass stuck to the chair with cheeto stained fingers and key board…..not a pretty picture. I think your writing is a true talent that needs to be published. I hope Katie gets to the level in art that you have reached with your blog. don’t want to sound like I am blowing smoke up your arse, but you are sooooo much better than a lot of publised authors I have read (Jon Feinstein comes to mind). Oh by the way Korea is buying a ton of Hemlock logs from the U.S. thank them for picking up my sagging indusrty.
UNCLE ED
Thanks for the most excellent props Unck. It always feels good to get some good positive feedback. I agree, I think I’m getting the hang of this blog thing. I just need to be more prolific. Every type of writing has its own nuances and I feel like I’m finally shaking the creative cobwebs after the last 3 years of undergrad academic writing. I hear the girls are doing big things. Tell them to keep up the good work in a not so good economy and political situation. I’m glad your industry’s picking up. In my next post, I’ll be going to church. I wondered where they got all the timbers to line that joint with wood paneling. And where they get all the tree for so many throw away chopsticks and paper cups? We must be beating China to the price and/or Japan is sucking up too much of the supply.
